Empowering Boys and Redefining Masculinity: The MAN UP Initiative
Higher Swing is eager to shine a spotlight on the Man Up Initiative Inc, as we share a common set of values aimed at uplifting and supporting the well-being of future generations. Our alignment in these shared principles emphasises our collective commitment to nurturing and empowering young individuals.
In an evolving world where social norms and expectations are constantly shifting, organisations like the MAN UP are making a significant impact by addressing the need to empower boys and young men while redefining traditional masculinity. Established in WA in 2019, this not-for-profit organisation has been at the forefront of promoting mental health, combating violence, and fostering emotional resilience among young men.
Redefining Masculinity through Peer-to-Peer Workshops
MAN UP is committed to reshaping the narrative around masculinity. Through a series of peer-to-peer workshops, addressing critical topics related to boys' and young men's mental health and wellbeing. These workshops serve as a safe and supportive space for discussions on healthy masculinity, relationships, and coping mechanisms.
Workshops that Transform Lives
MAN UP offers a range of workshops, each designed to for personal growth and self-awareness among participants:
- Male Culture - This workshop tackles stereotypes of masculinity head-on, encouraging positive language, attitudes, and healthy expressions of masculinity.
- Male Relationships - With a strong emphasis on consent and addressing abusive dynamics, this workshop empowers young men to build positive and respectful relationships.
- Male Coping - Recognising the importance of mental health, this workshop equips participants with the tools to identify negative coping mechanisms and offer support to themselves and others during challenging times.
Rural Outreach and Community Building
Notably, MAN UP's commitment extends beyond urban centers. The organisation has successfully run seven rural trips, providing essential sessions to approximately 1,600 young men in regions such as Geraldton, Bunbury, Exmouth, the Great Southern region, and the Peel region. After running trial sessions at primary schools across WA, it was clear conversations with boys at an even younger age was an important step to prepare them for high school. In 2023, the MAN UP program will now be available for primary schools.
The MAN UP Initiative is more than just an organisation; it's a movement that's reshaping the lives of young men, challenging stereotypes, and promoting healthy masculinity.
Both Higher Swing and MAN UP recognise the vital importance of providing young people with the tools and guidance they need to navigate the complexities of today's world successfully. This shared dedication to empowering youth drives us to and amplify our efforts for the greater good.
